Vision Rehab: the Optometric Model of Vision and its Significance for Therapists

ONLINE COURSE DESCRIPTION
In evaluating the child with visual perceptual and visual motor deficits a therapist must screen the child for visual efficiency skills. This course provides an overview of how ocular motility skills like saccades, pursuits and convergence affect visual function. Because of the neural control of eye movement and neuroplasticity of the brain, the ocular motility skills can be strengthened as it will positively influence how the child reads, writes and plays. This course will emphasize the collaboration between optometrist and therapist and present treatment ideas for remediation and or compensation.

- Identify anatomical eye components of the optometric model of vision.
- Identify the elements of a basic visual screen.
- Identfy the key features of binocularity and eye teaming for normal development and rehabilitation in children.

Subah Gupta MHS OTR/L, SIPT, CBIS received her Bachelor in Occupational Therapy from India and her Masters in Health Sciences from University of Indianapolis. She has been a practicing clinician for 18 years. Currently she works as a clinical leader at Lutheran Hospital and teaches in various OT/PTA/COTA programs. In the last 8 years she has developed a special interest in working with the pediatric and adult population with visual disorders. She is a certified brain injury and sensory integration specialist and lectures throughout the country on varied visual rehabilitation topics.
